The government has ordered authorities with ten or more employees to save electricity. Discussions are currently in progress regarding general ways in which the University can save electricity. All employees can already start helping in small ways.

Theft of passwords
During the night of both Thursday 22 and Friday 23 September 2022, several employees had their passwords stolen. Work is currently underway to minimise the damage.

The National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women (NCK) at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital is now moving to enhance its research profile. A new professorship is being appointed and two researcher positions have been created. In connection with this, the centre has been moved closer to the Department of Women's and Children's Health.

The information provided on the Staff Portal is good and sufficient in scope, but it is hard to find. This leads to many people shying away from using the portal and using other channels to obtain information instead – in particular via email.
Staff party to return
The staff party will not be held in 2022, but the plan is for it to return next year. To make room for more employees, possible new formats for the staff party are currently under consideration.

Problems with travel agency services
For some time now, there have been delays at Lingmerths, the University’s contracted supplier of travel agency services. They are having difficulty recruiting experienced travel bookers, a situation that turns out to be affecting the entire industry. They are now recruiting new staff on an ongoing basis to be able to provide a satisfactory service again.

A complaint sent to the National Board for Assessment of Research Misconduct has presented suspicions of research misconduct against the Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University, Anders Hagfeldt. The complainant asserts that at least two of the illustrations in a scholarly article published earlier this year contain manipulated images.

Uppsala University ranked as second best in Sweden
Uppsala University has dropped eleven places from last year and is now 89th in the international Academic Ranking of World Universities 2022, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”. Uppsala University has been ranked as Sweden’s second best university, behind Karolinska Institutet which takes 41st place. The University of Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s best university and ranks 39th.

Crime fiction is a popular literary genre across the globe, and Sweden is no exception. But how did we come to be so enamoured of fictional crimes, anyway? This is a question that author Elly Griffiths, the pen name of Domenica de Rosa, will address in the Adam Helms Lecture ‘Murder most lucrative: How we fell in love with crime’ in the University Main Building on the evening of Wednesday 21 September. Admissions statistics for the autumn semester 2022
Admissions for the autumn semester 2022 are now complete. A total of 50,795 students have been admitted to programmes at Uppsala University, a reduction by 3.1 per cent compared to the autumn semester 2021, when 52,402 were admitted. Campus Gotland has 5,564 admissions, a reduction by 14.3 per cent compared to the autumn semester 2021, when the number of admissions was 6,489.

Uppsala University new national coordinator for MOOCs

Mixed results in new world ranking
QS World University Rankings has released this year's list of the world's best universities. Uppsala University has fallen four places, from 124 to 128. At the same time, the University has improved its rankings in student-teacher ratio, international staff and international students.

Forestry under investigation
Uppsala University and Uppsala University Foundations Management of Estates and Funds (UAF) are being criticised in the media as well as internally for how the latter is managing its forest holdings. For this reason, an investigation is currently under way into how forestry should be managed in the future. Double Doctoral Degree Conferment ceremonies in May
On 18 and 25 May, it was finally time for the Doctoral Degree Conferment ceremony in the auditorium, after a long break due to the pandemic. The winter’s postponed graduation ceremony took place on 18 May and then one week later, on 25 May, it was time for the spring ceremony.
2022 pedagogy prizewinners nominated
This year’s pedagogy prizewinner at Uppsala University teaches courses related to theology, psychology, forensic science and electronics. The free pedagogy prize this year has the theme “The critical approach in a polarised world” and is awarded to Professor Thomas Nygren of the Department of Pedagogy, Didactics and Educational Studies.
Historical patents now searchable for everyone
Now it is easier to research the history of innovation in Sweden. All patents that were granted in Sweden from 1746 to 1945 have been digitalised and gathered into a searchable database – Historical Swedish patents – in a collaboration between the Swedish Intellectual Property Office (PRV) and Uppsala University. The search engine was inaugurated on 20 May by Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt and PRV’s Director General Peter Strömbäck.
Eight Uppsala University research projects on IVA 100 List
The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) has announced its 100 List 2022. The theme for the list is technology in the service of humankind and the chosen projects are all deemed to be ready for utilisation in the immediate future. Eight of the 70 projects on the list are being conducted at Uppsala University.
Measures are needed to reduce bullying and sexual harassment
A national survey has been conducted to determine how common gender-based vulnerability and sexual harassment are in academia. Generally speaking the result for Uppsala University is comparable to the survey’s national average. However, femal doctoral students at Uppsala University report a higher level of bullying than the national average.

Building 10 at New Ångström inaugurated
The official inauguration of Building 10 at the New Ångström Laboratory with ribbon cutting by Crown Princess Victoria was held on 13 May. “With its fantastic flexible classrooms and modern lab rooms, I’d like to say that this facility is almost unique in Europe,” said Johan Tysk, Vice-rector of the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology.
New Ångström will inspire creativity and an inter-disciplinary approach
The intention, with various types of places to meet, art works made of concrete and pendulum experiments, is that the new Ångström will inspire students and researchers to meet and come up with new ideas.
Update to Uppsala University’s visual guidelines
The updated visual guidelines apply to communications such as PowerPoint templates and to the use of fonts and the University logo. They are a simplification of the previous guidelines.

Running of the Falls is back in all its glory

Strong women in literature
8 March is International Women’s Day, a kind of apolitical day of commemoration, according to Wikipedia. Some countries choose to celebrate women more generally on this day. Elsewhere, it is a day to focus on women’s ongoing battle for equal rights. 46 women added to network for excellent research
AcademiaNet is a European database that features excellent female researchers. The Swedish Research Council has nominated 276 Swedish women to the database, including 46 researchers from Uppsala University. We have interviewed three of these researchers.

New quality-based allocation of research funding from 2024

Project grants for educational development

New aggregate ranking is wind in Uppsala University’s sails
In a ranking that aggregates three of the world’s premier university rankings – QS, THE and ARWU – Uppsala University ranks at 96 as the best Swedish university. The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia is behind this aggregate ranking, which was launched three years ago.

14 researchers join UU Innovation's mentor program

New framework agreements for catering services
15 January will mark the entry into force of the new catering services framework agreements for Uppsala. These agreements will be in force for one year with an option to extend for up to three years. These agreements cover 14 different suppliers across 4 different product areas.
Coronavirus report 7 January
Uppsala University is about to welcome students and staff back after a well-deserved break over the holidays. As everyone knows, the coronavirus pandemic is by no means over. Uppsala University takes this situation extremely seriously and is monitoring developments closely. The University is following the recommendations issued by the Swedish government and the Public Health Agency of Sweden. The current recommendation is that higher education should be conducted in person, on campus, as far as possible.

Call for funding applications within the Graduate School in Energy Systems
The Swedish Energy Agency has announced funding for doctoral student projects within the Graduate School in Energy Systems. Applications must be received no later than 2 March 2022.
New restrictions for limiting spread of infection
On 21 December, the Swedish government presented further restrictions and recommendations to minimise the spread of the coronavirus. The recommendations take effect on 23 December.

Department of Neuroscience to close down
After the Department of Neuroscience had been wrestling with complex problems that were having a negative impact on the work environment for a long time, the Vice-Chancellor decided on 16 December to close down the Department. The decision was based on an inquiry conducted by the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy under the leadership of Vice-rector Mats Larhed.

Teaching continues as usual
The Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Swedish government have announced new step-by-step measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 infection. The infection rate in Sweden is increasing slightly, though from low levels. The first stage of measures is in effect from 8 December.
New recommendations concerning COVID-19
The Swedish Agency for Government Employers has concluded that public authorities cannot demand proof of vaccination from either employees or the public. The Swedish government is introducing further infection control measures from 8 December but higher education institutions are to continue with on-campus teaching.

Additional restrictions may be introduced
The Public Health Agency of Sweden and the government have announced that additional restrictions regarding COVID-19 may be introduced next week (week starting 6 December). The University will not anticipate these decisions.

New IT system to support the rehabilitation process
Today, Uppsala University is launching a new rehabilitation system called Adato, a system that gathers all information in a rehabilitation case in a clear and legally compliant manner.
