How can you use Zoom?
Before you start using Zoom, it is vital that you go through the pages concerning your Zoom account, settings, etc. Follow this link in order to set up your Zoom account from Uppsala University!
Do your students require a guide for taking part in Zoom meetings? You can download an English version here!
In Zoom,
- You can give lectures with or without your camera on
- You can show a PowerPoint (with animations)
- You can share your browser or alternatively a document
- There is a virtual whiteboard for drawing and writing
- Play a video with sound
- Create polls for student voting
- Answer student questions via microphone or the chat
- Have up to 300 students in the same lecture at the same time (our recommendation is to not share web cameras in larger meetings. If you wish to host for more than 300 students contact our support: itsupport@uu.se)
- There is an option to record meetings
- You may download chat contents
You can create several meeting rooms, for different purposes. You will be the host in all these rooms, but you can add, e.g., other teachers on your course as co-hosts, with the same rights that you have. However, you may only be active in one room at a time. If one of your rooms is in use with a co-host and students, and you join another meeting, the former will be shut down. Therefore, as a rule, it is often better that your colleagues use rooms of their own, and if the students wish to meet online, independently of their teachers, they can also create rooms and invite their fellow students to them.
Your view of the meeting room does not necessarily match the views of other participants. All participants can change the size of the meeting window, choose to hide the chat etc., without their changes affecting what it looks like on other people's screens. This also means that, as a host, you may have the chat window open, but should be aware that some students may have hidden it, and may need instructions how to bring it up on screen again.
You rarely upload materials into the Zoom meeting. Instead, you open applications on your computer, and then share them with other participants. Nor is anything saved inside a Zoom meeting. Whiteboards, chat history etc. are deleted when the meeting ends.
Recordings will automatically download to your computer when you end the meeting. The process may take a while, depending on the length of the recording. The default location for recordings is a folder, named Zoom (where other types of saved materials from the meeting can be found, too). If you wish to share the recording with your students, you must upload the video file to, e.g., MedFarmPlay, YouTube, or Vimeo.
Instructions for sharing a PowerPoint presentation in Zoom
with single screen, or with two screens, can be found in Studium.
