Git - Version Management of Source Code
Git is software for tracking changes while writing source code. University IT Services (UIT) provides a light weight version of git that focuses on stability and simplicity, and therefore does not offer all the functions of other versions such as Github.
The University's git server is free to use for students and staff. Up to 3 GB of storage space is included. Should you need more storage space there is a charge of SEK 30 per GB per year. An agreement must be established before the extra storage space becomes available. Contact IT Support to increase your storage.
The git server is only intended for storage of source code created and managed as part of university operations. If you abuse this or related resources you may be suspended from the git server.
If you have not previously used git, there are good introduction courses on the internet, see for example https://git-scm.com.
Working in Git
The university git server can be reached at https://git.its.uu.se. Log in with your University ID (AKKA-ID) and password A. Git can be used for personal projects and for projects within a working group or a course.
Personal projects: There is no need to order personal projects. Simply log in at https://git.its.uu.se and create a repo (repository).
Projects for groups: If you manage a workgroup or a course you need to order a group (organization) within git, where you then can add your collaborators. Before you can add collaborators they must have logged in to git at least once. Note: Students cannot order a group, but they can be members of one, as in when they are taking a programming course.
Order your group by contacting IT Support with the following information:
- Type of group (one of these three):
- Research
- Education
- Other (please briefly state your purpose)
- Your desired name for the group
- The University ID (AKKA-ID) for the group owner
- The email address for the group owner
