The Erasmus+ programme outside EU
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s new programme for education, training, youth and sport. Within Erasmus+ there is a part called Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM). This allows for students and staff at Uppsala University to go on an exchange to a number of universities outside EU.
The Division for Internationalisation applies for new grants each year, so the list of Erasmus+ partner universities outside Europe may change. The information is updated in August, December and March.

Application criteria
The goal is for the teacher/staff to have a chance at developing professionally and personally, for the contacts between the partner universities to be strengthened, and to spread knowledge that the host university lacks. You may apply for teaching or for staff training.
It is possible to combine Staff mobility and Teacher Mobility in order to improve the quality of education (for example to discuss/learn more about different pedagogical/teaching methods). The teaching requirement is a minimum of 4 hours of teaching/week.
The main difference between Teacher exchange and Staff exchange is:
- Teacher exchange means that you have to teach at your host university for a minimum of 8 hours per week. Staff training does not have to include teaching.
- This means that Teachers can go on Staff exchange if their main purpose is to do professional training, rather than teaching.
- Activities that may count as teaching include all types of teaching of students where the teacher is physically present at the host university, e.g. seminars, lectures and tutoring.
Application
- Start by thinking about how your planned stay abroad would strengthen you in your professional role at Uppsala University. What are your expectations? What contacts do you/your department/unit already have? - Have a look at the websites of the various universities, to get an idea of which one you would like to visit.
- Talk to your head of department/line manager about it. Please note that you can apply now but you don´t have to go on exchange until later (30 June 2025 or 30 June 2026 , depending on which date the project was approved by the Swedish national agency, UHR).
- Contact the host university to discuss the assignment and receive an invitation letter.
- Apply for funding through the application form on this website. Submit the application during one of the application periods: 15 September–15 October and 1– 31 January. Make sure to apply on time. COVID-19
Erasmus grant applications will not be approved as long as there’s a valid decision by the Vice-Chancellor hindering international staff mobility and/or the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, MFA, is advising against international travels due to the spread of the COVID-19 at the planned start date for the mobility. And if there is an advise against travel to a specific country/specific countries due to COVID-19 no Erasmus grants might not be approved to those countries. All grant approvals are therefore conditional.
Due to COVID-19 staff members applying for an Erasmus staff mobility grant are recommended to:
- To follow the development, both via UU’s intra web and the Swedish MFA.
- To be flexible while planning the staff mobility, especially in regards to start date
- To check entry requirements for the host country by the host country's official information and Re-Open EU
- To notify the Division for Internationalisation of any potential changes: erasmus@uu.se
