Internationalisation at home

Internationalisation at home

Internationalisation at Home (IaH) or Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC). Regardless of the concept, it is above all about what the university can do to increase the exposure of internationalisation for those groups that can not or do not want to participate in a physical exchange. It is about creating conditions to meet the world even at home to strengthen the quality and relevance of the education at Uppsala University.

Internationalisation at home can also be a concept for how the university can support the integration of international students and staff at Uppsala University.

Internationalisation as part of an educational programme

At Uppsala University, there are a number of good examples of internationalisation at home. Two of these that have managed to successfully integrate internationalisation and international opportunities in addition to physical mobility within the framework of their educational programs are the Speech and Language Pathology Programme and the Physiotherapy Programme. Educational programmes with a desire to develop their work with internationalisation can therefore be inspired and learn from experiences in these programmes.

International lectures and international studdy buddies

The Speech and Language Pathology Programme has very successfully worked with internationalisation at home as part of their educational programme. The work began in 2015 in connection with the development of the new curriculum, and the project has been up and running since 2019. A large part of the motivation for including internationalisation at home in the educational programme was that the programme wanted to contribute to sustainable development while they simultaneously wanted to offer an equal education where all students could be offered the same international experience.

Internationalisation within the Speech and Language Pathology Programme has been incorporated into both programme texts and course objectives, and the students are thereby taught digitally about the conditions of speech therapy internationally. The teaching includes international lectures as well as joint exercises and case studies that are carried out together with study buddies from other countries. During the degree project, they also have several international projects and supervisors. The programme collaborates with countries such as India, USA, Tanzania and England.

For their work with internationalisation at home, they were in 2022 awarded the internationalisation prize of the Swedish Faculties of Medicine in 2022.

More information about the Speech and Language Pathology Programme can be found here.

Virtual exchanges and exchange of experience at home

In connection with annual network meetings within ENPHE (European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education), contacts was made with other European universities. This came to be the starting point for the work with internationalisation at home that is done today. Through these contacts, the Physiotherapist Programme became part of the project Virtual Exchange Physiotherapy. The project originates from the Netherlands and consists of students participating in virtual exchanges where they meet and study together with other students from different countries within Europe.

They also make sure to take advantage of the experiences of students that have participated in a physical activity abroad. Once a semester, they arrange the event "Fysios on the go" where they gather both students and teachers and let students who have participated in a physical activity abroad share their experiences. In this meeting place everyone can take part and learn from each other's international experiences without themselves having to participate in a physical activity abroad.

The Physiotherapist Programme have ambitions to implement the subject of global health in additional courses and that their work with virtual exchanges will be part of a examination course in semester one.

More information about the Physiotherapy Programme can be found here.
