International agreements

International agreements

Here you will find a short introduction to some of the different types of agreements.

Memorandum of Understanding

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a general agreement of the intention to cooperate in different areas. A MoU does not regulate the details of a specific collaboration, but each activity needs to be supplemented with an agreement where the details of the collaboration is specified. A MoU can be signed at different organisational levels at the University but should match the corresponding level at the partner university.

Student exchange agreement

A student exchange agreement is one of the most common internationalisation agreements. The agreement regulates how the exchange should work and usually covers:

  • The number of students to be exchanged. Normally a 1:1 ratio of number of semesters, months or credits is agreed. However, it may be possible to change for example a semester for summer courses. However, an exchange must always aim to be balanced in both directions
  • What subjects/courses/programmes the agreement covers
  • If any other services are included (help fining housing, language courses, etc.)
  • Contact information for the administrator responsible at each university
  • How any disagreements should be resolved
  • Any other commitments the parties undertake towards each other and the students.

An exchange agreement can be signed at:

  • Institution level. The agreement is limited to the subjects and course offering of the department. It is possible to sign a so-called “tripartite agreement” when a department sends students within a subject while receiving students from another subject. The department has the administrative responsibility for the agreement
  • Faculty level. The agreement is limited to the faculty´s students and course offering. The faculty has the administrative responsibility for the agreement
  • University-wide level. The agreement covers all students at the University and the courses marked as open to exchange students in Selma, as well as the available courses taught in Swedish. The Unit for International Mobility has the administrative responsible for the agreement.

There are a number of different programmes offering scholarship funds for exchange studies. It's possible to sign student exchange agreements within these programmes. These have certain formats and administrative demands.

  • Erasmus studies – Funded by the European Commission and is the most common agreement for international student mobility. Exchanges can include all subjects on bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level. Agreements can be made with universities throughout the EU as well as in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, the United Kingdom and Turkey
  • Nordplus – Funded by the Nordics Council of Ministers. Nordplus consists of a number of different networks of Nordic universities. Examples of networks in which Uppsala University participates are Nordlys and NORDTEK. Student and staff exchange can be funded through Nordplus.

Register student exchange agreements in MoveOn

All agreements on exchange studies must be registered in MoveOn.

Checklist for exchange agreements

The Unit for International Mobility has created a checklist in Swedish with questions to consider when negotiating agreements for student exchanges.

Agreement on foreign placement through e.g. field studies/internships/school placement/Clinical placements/Degree projects

Students can complete parts of their studies abroad, through e.g. field studies, internships, school placement, clinical placement or degree projects (here referred to as “the activity”). This means students are enrolled at a course at Uppsala University but are carrying out the activity in another geographical location than Sweden.

The activity can be arranged either through the student´s own contacts or via placements arranged by the department. Students who carry out an activity abroad sanctioned by the University are insured via Kammarkollegiet. This under the circumstances that there is a signed agreement between the department, the student and the host organisation, which regulates the time frame and scope of the activity.

Through Erasmus, students can also apply for a grant for an activity carried out in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Northern Macedonia, Serbia or Turkey. Read more about the Erasmus traineeship.

Teacher exchange agreements

Within the Erasmus programme, it’s possible to sign agreements on teacher exchanges. The time frame within the Erasmus programme can range from two days to two months at universities in EU, Iceland, Norway, Northern Macedonia, Serbia or Turkey.

Project agreements

When applying for various forms of international projects, it’s usually relevant to sign some kind of agreement if the application is granted. It’s important to carefully review the agreement before you hand in the application, to avoid delays within the project. Please contact the Legal Affairs Division for help reviewing agreements. There is a special process for agreements that require getting signed by the University Director/rector.

Contact

Please contact the Legal Affairs Division if you have any questions about international agreements: juravd@uadm.uu.se. Please contact Christopher McMahon, Head of unit at the Unit for International Mobility, if you need support in the strategic work with how and when to use international mobility agreements.
