Examples from teaching in the experimental classroom
Teachers from all disciplines at the university come to the experimental classroom in order to enhance student participation. Here are some examples:
Interaction designers in experimental classroom
Mikael Laaksoharju, a teacher of the course Advanced Interaction Design, had his students work in teams in the experimental classroom. The assignment was to design Ladok’s coming new student interface. Students could use pencil and paper, computers, mobile phones, or the interactive writing boards when they drafted their proposed designs. Afterwards each team presented its results on the large screens.
Art Education in the experimental classroom
Anna Marklund, teacher on the course Art Education in Preschool, lets her students present their projects in the experimental classroom. The students offer imaginative presentations when they combine the room´s layout and technology with role playing, singing, and media of all kinds.
Ethnologists in the experimental classroom
Karin S. Lindelöf, a senior lecturer at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, made use of the experimental classroom’s teaching tools to involve and activate her students.
Physiotherapy students in the experimental classroom
To enhance student participation, Ann Månsson, a lecturer at the Department of Neuroscience, had her students use the interactive writing boards when she taught biomechanics and functional anatomy.
Brainstorming about research projects in the experimental classroom
The research group Kullander Lab from the Department of Neuroscience used the experimental classroom for brainstorming about various research projects.
Law students practiced their rhetoric and presentation skills in the experimental classroom
Law students used the experimental classroom when they practised oral presentations in advance of a European moot court competition in Istanbul on 1-4 March. Each student was filmed as they gave their presentations, and the videos were then used to provide feedback to the respective students.
Nursing students in the experimental classroom
The Nursing Programme works actively with teaching issues. Anita Staaf and Eva Hovstadius, Department of Public Health and Caring Science, teach students in the Nursing Programme in the experimental classroom. The teachers want to integrate two closely related subjects and achieve a holistic view. They also want to have active students and create close collaboration between teachers with the help of a teaching-friendly environment.
International student collaboration in the experimental classroom
In the course IT in Society students at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, collaborate with students at the Rose Hulman Institute of technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. The project is externally commissioned, and part of the work, primarily the joint discussions, is done via Skype and Adobe Connect in the experimental classroom.
Active students in the experimental classroom
During the autumn semester Neena Thota, a researcher at the Department of Information Technology, gives a course in the Didactics of Computer Science in the experimental classroom. In the first session students were asked to work in groups with phenomenography. Their reports were presented via the interactive screens in the room – which the students appreciated.
Didactics of Computer Science in the experimental classroom
Anders Berglund, Department of Information Technology, gives the course ‘Didactics of Computer Science’ in the classroom. He teaches master-level students and successfully combines the technologies of the classroom with student collaboration and dialogue.
Computation methods in financial mathematics
Lina von Sydow, a senior lecturer at the Department of Information Technology, gives a course for 20 students in the ULL experimental classroom. Lina truly appreciates the experimental classroom, primarily because it makes it easier to activate her students in class.
