Doctoral student exchange with Berkeley
If you are a doctoral student at Uppsala University, an exchange agreement between the Institute of European Studies (IES) at the University of California, Berkeley, and Uppsala University can give you the chance to spend a period of one to three months at the Institute of European Studies, free of IES´s regular tuition fee.
Applications are now open to visit IES in 2024.
The closing date for applications is Wednesday 29 November 2023.
Application (Please, write your application in English)
Applications to take part in a doctoral student exchange are open once a year. At this time you can apply to visit IES for a stay starting no sooner than six months after notification that your application has been approved.
Your application will be assessed by a nomination committee at Uppsala University. The committee will nominate a maximum of two doctoral students per academic year. A corresponding committee at IES will take the final decision on whether the candidates nominated by Uppsala University can take part in the exchange.
Who can apply?
- You are eligible to apply if you have been admitted to a doctoral programme at Uppsala University.
- If you have already taken part in an exchange under the agreement, you cannot apply again.
- If you have been nominated but have declined the place, you can reapply.
Please note: In order to apply, you must personally have established contact with a researcher (or contact person) at IES who has undertaken in writing to receive you and to serve as your host during your stay. What does the agreement cover?
The agreement means that you will not have to pay IES´s regular tuition fee.
You are personally responsible for the following costs:
- Travel to and from the United States
- Accommodation in the United States
- Administrative fees charged by the university (at present 1500 dollar)
- Fees related to visas

Application process - Deadline November 29, 2023
You must upload the following documents in the application system:
- A personal letter (2-3 pages) containing (a) a personal presentation, (b) a brief description of your dissertation project, and (c) an explanation of why a period at IES would benefit your current doctoral studies.
- CV (max 2 pages).
- A certificate showing that your application has the support of your supervisor and the director of studies of the doctoral programme to which you have been admitted.
- A written invitation from a contact person at IES, certifying that they undertake to receive you and serve as your host during your stay. The letter of invitation can be submitted by e-mail to karin.sandrup@uu.se, no later than December 13th, 2023.
- Your current individual study plan.
Notification of decision
You will be notified of the decision on your application by February 2024.
