If sick leave continues after 90 days, as head of department/equivalent you can always contact occupational health services to discuss workplace rehabilitation activities. If the ill health is related to work, sick leave must be authorised via occupational health services. If the ill health is unrelated to work, sick leave may need to be authorised via a medical centre or specialist physician. Even if another care provider is behind the sick leave, a rehab coordinator from occupational health services can still provide good support to the employer for matters regarding the return to work and adaptations. They play an important coordinating function in rehabilitation matters and can, in discussions with you and other occupational health professionals, provide suggestions for suitable interventions, for example medical contact (sick leave), counselling with behavioural science specialists/psychologists and physiotherapy appointments. The rehab coordinator will arrange appointments with employers and employees and where necessary, invite Försäkringskassan to a rehabilitation meeting where the rehab plan is followed up. Don’t forget to remind your employee that they can obtain support from their union representative during the rehabilitation period.
As head of department/equivalent, it is important that you provide occupational health services with clear tasks and hold discussions before rehab meetings and other interventions. Occupational health services are an employer’s expert consultant and will provide advice and support upon the return to work, for example regarding suitable adaptations of current work and the employee’s overall work capacity.
In the event of long-term sick leave, it remains important for you as a manager to maintain contact with your employee. You can also enlist the help and support of an HR representative.
Försäkringskassan is the authority that assesses the right to sickness benefit for people whose work capacity is reduced as a result of illness. Read more about Försäkringskassan assessments and the rehab chain here.
