Here you will find more information about Uppsala University’s 30 April (Walpurgis Eve) traditions.

“In this week’s CRUSH COVID report, a clear break in the trend is discernible in the county, both in terms of the number of confirmed cases per 100,000 residents, and in the number of positive tests. This is encouraging and hopefully a sign that the third wave is broken,” says Chief Security Officer Fredrik Blomqvist. “And at Uppsala University we continue to report relatively low figures for the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19,” he adds. “In week 16 (19–25 April) we have a total of 25 confirmed cases – 19 students and 6 employees.”

Campus Gotland – and Region Gotland – in contrast are reporting high infection rates for the county. The regional health services are severely strained and a state of heightened preparedness came into effect on 22 April. Campus Gotland has otherwise come off relatively lightly in terms of numbers of students and staff contracting COVID-19.

After the pandemic

One issue that is high on the agenda for Uppsala University’s management is being able to announce a decision on how the University will conduct its activities during the summer and autumn.

The Vice-Chancellor recently adopted terms of reference for a preliminary study on experiences, expectations and challenges for the University after the pandemic. This study will focus on how the University could conduct its activities in various areas when the pandemic no longer affects our society as at present.

Infection status report

To summarise the infection situation, as of 30 April, there have been 869 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Uppsala University since the start of the 2020 autumn semester.

This figure breaks down as follows:

  • 683 Bachelor’s and Master’s students – an increase of 19 cases
  • 15 doctoral students – no increase
  • 171 members of staff – an increase of 6 cases

If you are confirmed infected with COVID-19, the Communicable Diseases Act requires you to inform people who have been in your proximity and whom you may have infected.
Uppsala University has created an online procedure to help you do this anonymously.

If you are confirmed infected with COVID-19, it is very important that you make sure to stay at home: Do not go to campus, exam rooms or work. And keep up to date with the current rules of conduct.

Breakdown by disciplinary domain

The 683 Bachelor’s and Master’s students confirmed infected are distributed across the disciplinary domains as follows (change from previous week in parentheses):

  • Hum/Sam – 272 (+6) confirmed cases
  • Med/Farm – 290 (+10) confirmed cases
  • Tek/Nat – 121 (+3) confirmed cases

Managing confirmed infections in education

When an infection is confirmed, the disciplinary domain concerned deals with the question of whether teaching should continue to be conducted on campus (if that is currently being done) or whether there is reason to switch to online education. Region Uppsala carries out contact tracing and contacts the individuals deemed necessary in view of the contacts reported by the infected person. The University has no responsibility for this process.

The Communicable Diseases Act requires:

If you are confirmed infected, the Communicable Diseases Act requires you to inform people whom you suspect you may have infected. As part of Uppsala University’s efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 infection, the University has created an online procedure to help you do this anonymously.

To test or not to test

The infection control doctor in Uppsala County requests those who have been confirmed infected not to get tested again after recovering from COVID-19. Doing so has no medical benefits and is an unnecessary drain on testing resources. Resources for PCR testing in Region Uppsala are under great strain.
