Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation
Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation
The Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) mainly supports research in the social sciences. Prioritized projects include new research areas and research that is interdisciplinary.
The foundation supports projects of high scientific potential that focus on a coherent scientific question. A project should have an independent objective and not only constitute additional funding for ongoing projects.
A normal project has a budget between SEK 3 and 10 million during three to five years.
MMW has an annual call for free project grants, as well as usually also a call with a specific focus. The specified focus varies from year to year.
The call opens March 1st 2024
MMW usually announces both free and targeted project grants.
For both the free and the targeted project grants from MMW, it is the Head of Department who handles Uppsala University's internal prioritization, and signs the mandatory letter of support. The Research Advisors at Humsam's Research Support Unit can help you with formulating the letter.
In order to get an estimate of the number of applications that will be submitted from the university and to receive contact information, researchers need to register their interest in a web form (that opens closer to deadline). In connection with the registration of interest, more information will be sent to interested researchers via e-mail.
When constructing a budget for MMW projects, Wallenberg's own budget template (only in Swedish) must be used. The researcher should contact his departmental economist early on to discuss the items in the budget and to complete a draft budget. The draft is sent to the Financial Administration and Procurement Division (FAPD) that will review the budget and fill in the specific indirect cost percentages. Note that it is very common that adjustments to the budget need to be made after the FAPD's review. It is therefore important to respect the deadlines that have been set.
The support letter is an important part of the application. It is the Head of Department who is in charge of the internal prioritization and signs the support letter, but a research consultant can help with the composition of the letter. In the “Links”-box above there is a template for the support letter as well as other documents needed for composing them, Mission, goals and strategies for both the University and the Domain for humanities and social science. An information meeting with researchers and departmental economists will be held February 20th 2024 at 10:30. Those who have registered in the web form above will receive further information.
