This talk seeks to examine the overlaps and tensions that arise when we read French feminist Julia Kristeva Chicana feminist Gloria Anzaldúa together. The conceptual, stylistic, and thematic kinship in their bodies of work has remained almost entirely unexamined in the secondary literature, and they did not read or engage one another. Nevertheless, Kristeva and Anzaldúa share an acute sense of foreignness in their lived realities and have both centered this experience in their writing. They are both committed to a model of subjectivity that stresses multiplicity, heterogeneity, ambiguity, and strangeness. The subject-in-process, the uncanny, the shadow beast, the new mestiza, the nepantla – these are all figures meant to evoke a multiplicitous self that refuses stability, universality, and homogeneity. And yet, situatedness matters, and Kristeva and Anzaldúa are very clearly differently situated. Paying careful attention to these differences, I will take seriously Sara Ahmed’s suggestion that strangeness is in fact unevenly distributed and that some others have already been recognized as stranger than other others.
