Tips from the editors: summer reading with a University connection
Holidays and the summer are fast approaching. And that means more time to read books, hopefully. Here are some reading tips from the editors. As usual, the authors are affiliated with Uppsala University.
Inquiry into research and collaboration support
University Director Caroline Sjöberg tasked an external analyst with reviewing how research and collaboration support can be reinforced at Uppsala University. The inquiry has now been submitted to the Director and further work is under way.
Important information affecting all employees: the University change bank for salary payments
In September, the University will be changing the bank it uses for salary payments – from Nordea to Danske Bank. Consequently, in order to receive their pay without delay, all employees on the University’s payroll need to register the bank account into which their salary should be paid in good time.
New Biobank Act this summer
On 1 July 2023, a new Biobank Act(2023:38) will enter into force, replacing the current Biobank Act (2002:297).

Winners of the 2023 Distinguished Teaching Awards selected
The winners of this year’s Uppsala University Distinguished Teaching Awards in Religious Studies, Business Studies, Paediatrics and Chemistry. This year, the Free Distinguished Teaching Award on the theme “Creative teaching” is awarded to Karen Brounéus at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research.

20-year-old supercomputer centre popular for teaching purposes
The University’s supercomputer centre UPPMAX has been up and running for 20 years and today it is a valuable resource for researchers, teaching staff and students alike. “Students get captivated and gain a different perspective on their chemistry studies than what they are used to,” says lecturer and theoretical chemist Chao Zhang.

Conferment Ceremony and cannon salutes on 26 May 2023
The University’s Spring Conferment Ceremony for new doctoral graduates will take place on Friday 26 May 2023. The degree ceremony in the Grand Auditorium will be accompanied by cannon salutes. Please spread the word about the cannon salutes so that as many people as possible are prepared for the noise.

Uppmax and Akademiska Hus adapt electricity power demand
Between 2020 and 2022, a climate pot of SEK 2 million was allocated by the Vice-Chancellor. Uppsala Multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Computational Science (Uppmax) received some of this money in 2022 to dynamically adapt electricity consumption in its computer hall. Work is now under way in collaboration with Akademiska Hus.

Uppsala University hosts a WHO Collaborating Centre on Migration and Health Data and Evidence, which works to integrate scientific evidence into decision-making processes and practices.
Support for Uppsala Municipality’s Application to the European Capitals of Culture 2029
Uppsala Municipality is working towards the award of the title European Capital of Culture 2029 by the European Commission. Uppsala University is collaborating with the municipality to support the application.

Cheap sustainability-lunches are blazing a trail towards less food waste and a greater sense of community
Last year a new initiative was started on Gotland with the aim of reducing food waste and at the same time increasing the availability of sustainable, good-value food. Every week cheap lunches are served that are made with ingredients from local supermarkets that otherwise would have gone to waste. The project has received funding from the University's climate pot and has attracted new visitors to the student union.
Lower carbon footprint compared to 2019
Each year, public authorities must report on their environmental management efforts. The report for 2022 shows that energy consumption fell and that the climate impact of business travel was 44 percent lower than the 2019 figure.
Inventory of research infrastructure needs
It is now time to begin the University’s internal inventory of the research infrastructure needs of national interest ahead of the Swedish Research Council’s call for grants in 2025.

First Attractive Innovation Projects of the year
Barely one quarter into 2023 and five projects have been awarded the Attractive Innovation Project Award by UU Innovation after significant progress on the path from idea to innovation. What is the bibliometric report?
Every December a bibliometric report comes out, Uppsala University Annual Bibliometric Monitoring. Put briefly, the bibliometric report is a quantitative analysis of research publications.

Risk of denial-of-service attacks
The websites of several Swedish public authorities have been brought down by denial-of-service attacks recently. It may be wise to mentally prepare for the idea that such attacks could also affect Uppsala University.

The names given to the clouds, an important part of the university's history
The book “Molnspanare– en meteorologisk historia” (Cloud spotters – a meteorological history) tells of the emergence of meteorology as a scientific subject. Among other things, you can read about how the Latin names and classification of the clouds were decided at a conference in the University Building in Uppsala, including Cirro-cumulus and Nimbus.
Model for engagement with schools
“Zoom with a PhD student in biology” is a model for engaging with school students and teachers. The model has been taken up at the Swedish Centre for School Biology for engagement with upper secondary schools, and the results are promising.
Treat yourself to a climate course this Christmas
There is now a general page where you can apply for open, online courses to develop skills relating to the climate transition. The courses are part of the Öppet för klimatet (Open to the Climate) project, which has been established by the government as part of its climate upskilling initiative.

Measurable targets in new Environmental Plan
The University has a new Environmental Plan. The ambition is for the University to be climate-neutral by 2045. An intermediate goal is to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Inspiration for changes to efforts against discrimination
Not a single higher education institution fulfils the Discrimination Act, according to a new report from the Equality Ombudsman. “The report contains recommendations and advice that offer inspiration for change,” notes Åsa Cajander, Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on Equal Opportunities.

Many accounts suspended due to fraud
The number of employees tricked into clicking on links as part of fraud attempts via email and SMS has increased. As a result, the number of accounts being suspended to minimise the damage has also risen. Employees whose accounts have been suspended must then request an activation code.

20 new scholarships for researchers from Ukraine
Uppsala University will continue to grant scholarships to researchers who have moved to Sweden from Ukraine due to the war. A decision was taken recently to grant a further 20 scholarships totalling SEK 3 million. Yulia Razmetaeva was one of the first to be granted a scholarship.

The library is switching to a new search and loan system
The University Library is switching to a new search and loan system on 1 November. This will impact some of the services. The library will be open as normal. The search tool on the library’s website will be available for searching and for accessing electronic resources.

Public authorities to save electricity
The government has ordered authorities with ten or more employees to save electricity. Discussions are currently in progress regarding general ways in which the University can save electricity. All employees can already start helping in small ways.

In spring 2023 the course ‘Mindfulness-Based Stress Management’ (7.5 credits) will be offered at Uppsala University. The deadline for applications is 17 October 2022.
UU Innovation Mentor Programme provides additional support to ten researchers
The UU Innovation Mentor Programme matches doctoral students and researchers with experienced mentors working outside academia. A new round has just started and all participants met with their mentors at the kick-off meeting to discover what awaits.
Theft of passwords
During the night of both Thursday 22 and Friday 23 September 2022, several employees had their passwords stolen. Work is currently underway to minimise the damage.
Avoid using work emails for private purposes
The University regularly releases email logs and email messages upon request and following legal review. Employees should therefore avoid using their work emails for private correspondence.
Society for history enthusiasts
The Society for University and Student History is open to anyone who is interested. Every semester, the Society holds informal lectures with different speakers to delve into the history of the University and its students under relaxed conditions.

Each year, Uppsala University awards prizes, awards and medals to those who have furthered research, education or development at the University. This will be done on 7 October 2022, when the University celebrates its anniversary (namely, its 545th).
The National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women to strengthen its research profile
The National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women (NCK) at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital is now moving to enhance its research profile. A new professorship is being appointed and two researcher positions have been created. In connection with this, the centre has been moved closer to the Department of Women's and Children's Health.
Good information on the Staff Portal – but hard to find
The information provided on the Staff Portal is good and sufficient in scope, but it is hard to find. This leads to many people shying away from using the portal and using other channels to obtain information instead – in particular via email.
Staff party to return
The staff party will not be held in 2022, but the plan is for it to return next year. To make room for more employees, possible new formats for the staff party are currently under consideration.

Problems with travel agency services
For some time now, there have been delays at Lingmerths, the University’s contracted supplier of travel agency services. They are having difficulty recruiting experienced travel bookers, a situation that turns out to be affecting the entire industry. They are now recruiting new staff on an ongoing basis to be able to provide a satisfactory service again.

Alumnus of the Year: “Humanities students also need a dose of life science”

But with a virus that evades both immune system defences and vaccines, Richard Bergström's coordinating efforts are still needed. Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt reported for research misconduct
A complaint sent to the National Board for Assessment of Research Misconduct has presented suspicions of research misconduct against the Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University, Anders Hagfeldt. The complainant asserts that at least two of the illustrations in a scholarly article published earlier this year contain manipulated images.

Following nominations and proposals, the University Director has appointed the group that will select the "other employees" of the Electoral College.
Uppsala University ranked as second best in Sweden
Uppsala University has dropped eleven places from last year and is now 89th in the international Academic Ranking of World Universities 2022, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”. Uppsala University has been ranked as Sweden’s second best university, behind Karolinska Institutet which takes 41st place. The University of Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s best university and ranks 39th.

Elly Griffiths to give this year’s Adam Helms Lecture on our love affair with crime
Crime fiction is a popular literary genre across the globe, and Sweden is no exception. But how did we come to be so enamoured of fictional crimes, anyway? This is a question that author Elly Griffiths, the pen name of Domenica de Rosa, will address in the Adam Helms Lecture ‘Murder most lucrative: How we fell in love with crime’ in the University Main Building on the evening of Wednesday 21 September. The lecture will be held in English.

Admissions statistics for the autumn semester 2022
Admissions for the autumn semester 2022 are now complete. A total of 50,795 students have been admitted to programmes at Uppsala University, a reduction by 3.1 per cent compared to the autumn semester 2021, when 52,402 were admitted. Campus Gotland has 5,564 admissions, a reduction by 14.3 per cent compared to the autumn semester 2021, when the number of admissions was 6,489.

Uppsala University new national coordinator for MOOCs
As part of the Swedish Government’s initiative to develop skills to meet the challenge of climate change, nine Swedish higher education institutions have been granted funds to develop Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to support society’s climate transition. Uppsala University has been appointed national coordinator and courses are due to begin during 2022.

New national hotel procurements as of 1 July 2022

User Survey and External Review of IT
It has now been just over two years since the new division for University IT Services was established. This past spring, as part of the ongoing transformation, the division carried out a user survey regarding IT at the University. Mixed results in new world ranking
QS World University Rankings has released this year's list of the world's best universities. Uppsala University has fallen four places, from 124 to 128. At the same time, the University has improved its rankings in student-teacher ratio, international staff and international students.

Elaborated proposal for quality-based resource allocation
Formas, Forte, the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova have presented a further development of their proposal for a model for quality-based resource allocation, which was first presented in 2021.
Contribute to Enlight teaching and learning conference
The European network ENLIGHT hosts a teaching and learning conference on 16-18 November in Göttingen. Teachers from Uppsala University are welcome to propose conference papers by 20 June 2022.
