Call for funding applications within the Graduate School in Energy Systems
The Swedish Energy Agency has announced funding for doctoral student projects within the Graduate School in Energy Systems. Applications must be received no later than 2 March 2022.
New restrictions for limiting spread of infection
On 21 December, the Swedish government presented further restrictions and recommendations to minimise the spread of the coronavirus. The recommendations take effect on 23 December.

Department of Neuroscience to close down
After the Department of Neuroscience had been wrestling with complex problems that were having a negative impact on the work environment for a long time, the Vice-Chancellor decided on 16 December to close down the Department. The decision was based on an inquiry conducted by the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy under the leadership of Vice-rector Mats Larhed.

Teaching continues as usual
The Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Swedish government have announced new step-by-step measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 infection. The infection rate in Sweden is increasing slightly, though from low levels. The first stage of measures is in effect from 8 December.
New recommendations concerning COVID-19
The Swedish Agency for Government Employers has concluded that public authorities cannot demand proof of vaccination from either employees or the public. The Swedish government is introducing further infection control measures from 8 December but higher education institutions are to continue with on-campus teaching.

Additional restrictions may be introduced
The Public Health Agency of Sweden and the government have announced that additional restrictions regarding COVID-19 may be introduced next week (week starting 6 December). The University will not anticipate these decisions.

New IT system to support the rehabilitation process
Today, Uppsala University is launching a new rehabilitation system called Adato, a system that gathers all information in a rehabilitation case in a clear and legally compliant manner.

Solar panels in place on the roof

Proof of vaccination not required for teaching sessions
The government’s decision to require proof of vaccination at public gatherings of more than 100 people does not apply to teaching sessions or exams. However, the requirement does apply to defences of doctoral theses, which count as public gatherings.

Problems at department may lead to closure

The most emissions come from air travel
Over one year, the University’s activities are expected to generate emissions of just over 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to approximately 8 tonnes of carbon dioxide per full-time equivalent employee. The University’s quality assurance system for education approved by the Swedish Higher Education Authority
The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) has reported that Uppsala University’s quality assurance system for courses and study programmes at all levels has received the highest rating “Approved quality assurance processes”.
Apply for Grants for Publications
It is possible to apply for grants for scientific and scholarly publications. Grants from Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis and Vilhelm Ekman University Foundation are normally considered for part of the total cost and only prior to publication. Doctoral dissertations are not considered for support.

This autumn, the Student Health Services will be arranging the University’s first Mental Health Week. The event will take place between 11 and 15 October in conjunction with the World Health Organization’s annual World Mental Health Day on 10 October.
A ceremony of its time
For the first time ever, Uppsala University’s Conferment Ceremony has been conducted entirely in absentia – that is, remotely. “It went better than I hoped; given the circumstances, it was an undoubted success,” says Martin Mickelsson, one of the new doctors who turned out well-dressed in suit and cravat.

Innovation prize awarded to pharmaceutical researchers
Hjärnäpplet is awarded by Uppsala University for outstanding transference of knowledge. This year’s prize goes to Professors Rolf Larsson and Peter Nygren and Associate Professor Joachim Gullbo for their successful efforts to improve drug therapies against cancer.
Changes to the Aliens Act creating difficulties
Sweden’s immigration legislation was amended on 20 July 2021 and a major change is that applicants for permanent residence permits must now be able to support themselves. This makes it difficult for doctoral students and researchers to stay in Sweden.

If you have written course literature or textbooks, you can apply for photocopying (reproduction) royalties from Läromedelsförfattarna. The deadline for applications is 15 October 2021.
Budget Bill announces funding for lifelong learning and placements
In its Budget Bill, the government proposes a higher funding ceiling for Uppsala University, extra investments in the National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women and healthcare programmes, and a further three-year commitment to lifelong learning.

Training on active measures to prevent discrimination in working life and in education
The HR-Division and the Student Affairs and Academic Registry Division offer an education targeting the head of the department, the department’s VHR and the department’s Equal Opportunities officer to participate in a training about how the departments preventive work with active measures to counteract discrimination, sexual harassment, harassment and reprisals against employees and students.
Parking meters to be updated

60 years ago: Thousands of students honoured Dag Hammarskjöld
This year it is 60 years since Dag Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash in what is now Zambia – at the time, it was called Northern Rhodesia. When he was buried in Uppsala in 1961, the world came to Uppsala. Such a statesman’s funeral had never been seen before in this city.

New seminar series on new directions for cultivation

No new cases have been reported for three weeks in the University and in week 25 (21–27 June) only 37 cases were noted in all of Uppsala County. The situation is also stable in Region Gotland, where 12 confirmed cases were reported that week.

Digital meetings during Almedalen Week

The Admission Regulations is modernised
The Admission Regulations – Uppsala University’s regulations for admission to Bachelor’s and Master’s level education – have been revised and approved by the University Board. It will not enter into force until 6 June 2022.

Autumn return to campus – update

Hans Ellegren new Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Hans Ellegren, Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Uppsala University, has been elected new Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He will succeed Professor Göran K. Hansson at the turn of the year 2021–2022. As Secretary General, he hopes to be able both to watch over the Academy’s historical heritage and ensure that the organisation is active here and now.

The University continues to report low figures for confirmed cases of COVID-19. This report adds a total of twelve confirmed cases, consisting of eight students and four employees, and in the current week there are only four confirmed cases.

Student nations cooperate to secure their futures
Uppsala’s student nations have had a tough time during the pandemic. Both Uppsala University and Uppsala Municipality have made financial contributions and the 13 student nations are collaborating to ensure that they will be able to return to operating on a large scale in future. Student nations have played an important role in student life in Uppsala since the seventeenth century, providing a home away from home for many students, where they can meet friends, study, take part in activities and visit the pub or night club. Over the past year, however, the financial situation has been grim.
Many access cards not working
On Friday 28 May a problem arose in the system that manages the University’s access cards. As a result of the problem, several thousand cards are currently not working.
WASP and DDLS joint call for research projects
Open call! The two largest research programs in Sweden, WASP (Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program) and DDLS (the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science, funded by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation) has now launched a joint call for bridging research projects, as a step towards the ultimate goal of solving ground breaking research questions across disciplines.

The government announced yesterday that the requirement to conduct higher education and other adult education remotely will be removed on 1 June. The Vice-Chancellor has called the Management Council to a meeting on Monday to discuss adjustments to decisions of the Vice-Chancellor now in effect.

Uppsala University’s function for reporting wrongdoing (often referred to as whistleblowing) and procedures for dealing with these reports are to be reviewed after an internal audit found shortcomings and a need for remedial measures.
Student Health Services’ new health educator part of long-term investment
According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, higher education institutions are responsible for providing students with access to preventive health care to promote physical and mental health. While Student Health Services has long worked with outreach and preventive health care, from this year there will be a longer-term investment in health educators.

Appointment Regulations – revised and adopted
The Appointment Regulations have been adopted by the University Board. The overarching goal of the Appointment Regulations is to create conditions that enable Uppsala University to be an even stronger competitor in its role as an international research and education university.
Allocation of increased research funding finalised
The government revealed today how the increased direct government funding for research announced in the research bill last autumn will be distributed among the higher education institutions in Sweden. The large universities, including Uppsala, receive the smallest increase in percentage terms.
Avoid phishing
Phishing refers to various attempts to trick you into handing over personal data such as passwords and codes via digital communication channels. Such data can later be used to steal information, money or to gain access to IT systems.
Phishing attack toward the University
Uppsala University is currently experiencing a phishing attack. The attack takes the form of an email notifying you that your email account needs to be updated. The user is prompted to click on a link and enter a username and password into an online form.
Decision on autumn expected 18 May
With vaccination proceeding according to plan, COVID-19 infection rates are expected to decline. Uppsala University is planning for a return to on-campus teaching from the 2021 autumn semester onwards.
Welcome to a new kind of conferment ceremony
It will soon be time at last for a doctoral degree conferment ceremony at Uppsala University again, after a break due to the pandemic. Though it may not be in the usual form, hopefully it will still be a grand ceremony. On 28 May, 119 jubilee doctors and 43 new doctoral graduates will have their degrees conferred in an online ceremony from the Grand Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to follow the conferment ceremony online.

A history thesis from 1990 has become an overnight best seller. It is now so popular that it is being digitised and is available to download free of charge.
Uniform procedures and information to reduce cheating
There are deficiencies in the process for preventing, detecting and dealing with suspected cheating in examinations. The University Board has therefore decided on various skill-enhancement measures and to develop the common information material for students.

COVID-19 report, 23 April
In week 15 (12–18 April), for the first time for several weeks, a slightly higher case rate is reported than in the preceding week. However, just as previously, most of the cases of infection are occurring outside Uppsala University’s organisation and activities. In view of the severely strained situation in the health services, the region has extended the validity of existing recommendations until 17 May.
Botanical Garden and campus closed on 30 April
Uppsala University is closing the Botanical Garden and all campus areas between 18:00 on 29 April and 09:00 on 1 May. Only authorised staff will have access to these areas during this period.

The current COVID-19 infection situation is serious and Uppsala University has discussed closing its campus. The outbreak has been traced to two student parties, and from that origin, infection has spread to four of the University’s campus areas.

The Horizon Europe (HEU) program is EU’s framework program for research and innovation. The Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) allocates SEK 10 million for applicants who already have ongoing SSF projects or have completed such projects after January 2018.

The week of 22–28 February confirmed the fears of an increased infection rate, with a total of 32 new cases confirmed during the week. The University has done and continues to do all it can to limit the spread of infection.
Suggestions for improving gender equality when filling positions of trust
The Equal Opportunities Committee at the Faculty of Social Sciences has carried out a project looking into how different positions of trust are filled within the faculty. The report includes suggestions for measures and reflections for departments, the University as a whole, and for individual senior researchers.

Our internal environmental auditors – here is how they work!
In 2015, Uppsala University began to have its own environmental auditors. There are currently three auditors. The purpose of an audit is to check that the authority complies with applicable environmental legislation and other governance documents. During the pandemic, the audit took place over Zoom, but environmental auditors Set Lonnert and Gunilla Petersson look forward to being able to conduct physical visits again.

It is possible to apply for grants for scientific and scholarly publications. Grants from Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis and Vilhelm Ekman University Foundation are normally considered for part of the total cost and only prior to publication. Doctoral dissertations are not considered for support.

Implementation of Charter & Code completed
Uppsala University is now concluding its project to introduce measures resulting from its receipt of the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award. These measures will be reported to the European Union in February 2021.
Digital visit as part of the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s institutional review
During the period 2017–2022, the Swedish Higher Education Authority is conducting institutional reviews of all of the country’s higher education institutions. Upcoming decision on extended restrictions regarding COVID-19
The Swedish government decided today to extend the decision on stricter restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Negative COVID-19 test required for entry into Sweden
The Government decided on 3 February that foreign nationals will have to present a negative test result for ongoing COVID-19 infection upon entry into Sweden, regardless of where they are arriving from.
COVID-19 topped the news list
It may come as no surprise, but the coronavirus was the most popular news topic on the Staff Portal in 2020. More than 128 news articles on the Staff Portal dealt with the pandemic, and the dedicated “COVID-19” web page created for continuous information updates had as many as 32,539 unique page views in the month of March.

The Swedish Association for Social and Mental Health (RSMH) strives to give people with mental illness the conditions to return to a good life and is now announcing the annual research scholarship of SEK 40,000. The last day to apply is 31 March 2021.
Project grants for educational development – PUMA/PUDU

Semester start and homeworking cause problems for University’s IT systems
The start of the semester around 18 January brought several simultaneous disruptions in IT services and systems at Uppsala University, including the Student Portal, the VPN service and Zoom.
She gives a Swedish perspective on Egyptian mummies
There are a lot of exciting objects in Gustavianum's collections, including a wide variety of mummies. Curator Sofia Häggman is currently writing a book about these and other mummies, discussing how they were previously used in medicine, and what new examination methods enable us to discern from the several thousand-year-old remains from ancient Egypt.
Traditional Valborg celebrations in Uppsala cancelled
The celebration of Valborg was cancelled last year because of the pandemic. The actors involved in Valborg activities have now reluctantly concluded again that it is impossible to celebrate safely. The COVID-19 situation can be expected to remain serious even at the end of April. Consequently, a joint decision has been taken that activities associated with the traditional celebration of Valborg in Uppsala will be cancelled this year as well.

The curve for confirmed cases of COVID-19 is heading back down at Uppsala University and a generally positive trend is reported in Sweden as well. This week’s report includes a new figure: the number of people vaccinated in Uppsala County, which may be of interest. So far, 7,003 people in the county have received their first injection and 55 have received a second dose.

Online SciFest inspires record interest
Interest in participating in SciFest this year is at a record high, with no less than 112 activities registered. This is a new record for the science festival, which will host many new exhibitors and considerably more researchers from the humanities and social sciences than in previous years. In 2021, for the first time, SciFest will go online.

New organisation for UU Innovation
On 1 January 2021, UU Innovation’s organisation was divided into two new units that fall under the Vice-Chancellor: Uppsala University Innovation (UU Innovation) and Uppsala University Collaboration (UU Collaboration). The purpose is to strengthen the University’s joint innovation and collaboration work in accordance with the University’s goals and strategies.

Students at Uppsala University are in the midst of their exam period for the 2020 autumn semester, which means more students are on campus. “We appeal to students to try to find good alternatives at home for their studies, if possible, but when they need to use campus facilities they must continue to maintain a good distance and pay attention to instructions from our social distancing wardens and campus security staff.”

The University’s history –150-year book project will reach completion in 2027
The History of Uppsala University book project, which kicked off in 1869, is coming to an end. The very last section of the book is being written by Carl Frängsmyr, an historian of science and ideas. As an author with broad knowledge of the University, Carl Frängsmyr previously published Uppsala universitet 1852–1916 [Uppsala University 1852–1916] as well as several books, invitation essays, and other essays on a wide range of subjects, including academic celebrations, ice hockey and a variety of topics in between.
