Following the Vice-Chancellor's decision on implementing Quality and Renewal 2024 (Q&R24, or KoF24 in Swedish), the Disciplinary Domain Board of Medicine and Pharmacy (ON) has decided on directives for the disciplinary domain-specific part: Q&R24 Medfarm. The directive describes the goals and structure of Q&R24 Medfarm, and is the result of a preliminary study conducted at the Disciplinary Domain in spring 2023.

This time of year, the city’s jackdaws start to gather on roofs and treetops. Every morning, outside my office, they line up on the buildings in neat rows and in good order before suddenly taking off in a swirling cloud, filled with energy, along with colleagues from nearby rooftops. I have also noticed that they seem to have an inclusive culture, and both rooks, crows and the occasional pigeon are allowed to join the gang.
3D printing – or additive manufacturing – is a rapidly developing technology. By building layer upon layer, it is possible to design three-dimensional structures from all kinds of material. Professor Johan Kreuger uses the technology to create biological systems where he can study cells and test drugs. In the long run, he hopes to produce tissues that can be used as transplants in humans.
Marie Allen, Professor of Forensic Genetics, has for many years studied methods for DNA profiling samples that are challenging, for example, traces from crime scenes. With new knowledge about our genome and the latest technological developments, DNA analyses from crime samples can provide information about the physical appearance of a perpetrator. Together with other researchers, she is now studying the significance of new types of evidence in criminal investigations and the legal process.
“The emergency department is an environment where I think AI can become extremely valuable. Doctors in emergency settings might have two minutes to check a patient’s medical record and prepare before the ambulance arrives. This is a very limited time for a human, but for an AI, two minutes is a long time. We believe that AI will contribute to saving lives in the emergency department in a near future.”
In August 2018, the bioprocess facility Testa Center was officially opened at what was then GE Healthcare’s facility in Uppsala. Last year a new initiative was started on Gotland with the aim of reducing food waste and at the same time increasing the availability of sustainable, good-value food. Each year, public authorities must report on their environmental management efforts. The report for 2022 shows that energy consumption fell and that the climate impact of business travel was 44 percent lower than the 2019 figure.

On 1 and 2 September, the Uppsala Antibiotic Center hosted the first meeting of Nordic Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) centres, welcoming seven centres from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. The goal of the meeting was to create an alliance against antimicrobial resistance and find cooperation and synergy points across the different Nordic initiatives.
