The world’s longest-running TV series is the American soap opera “Guiding Light”, which set the style for the genre. It was first broadcast as a radio series and was then on American television between 1952 and 2009. There were 15,762 episodes in total!

Some may remember the American TV series Dallas, with all its power struggles. It was the most popular TV show in the world in the early 1980s. The series premiered in Sweden on 30 January 1981 and had a twelve-year run – with a somewhat nostalgic return with a new season in 2012.

There has probably been a lot of TV and movie watching at home on the sofa during the pandemic. I read that the film industry is having a hard time. People aren't going to the cinema so much anymore, partly because of the high price and partly because there are so many TV/movie channels and streaming services competing for audiences.

We members of the Staff Portal Editorial Team would love to know whether you have any good TV series (regardless of channel or streaming service) that you want to recommend to the rest of us.

Personally, I like SVT and public broadcasting, which offers a superb mix of news, documentaries, films, series and entertainment, most of which you can rewatch whenever you want on SVT Play.
One of my favourite genres is documentaries. In terms of series, there are entertaining ones like Världens historia and På spåret.

A real nail-biter was the British series that aired last autumn, Unforgotten [called “Saknad, aldrig glömd” in Sweden]. The series features Nicola Walker as Cassie, a detective who solves cold cases of disappearance and murder together with her colleague Sunny. Four seasons have been released so far, with 3–6 episodes per season. It’s enough to keep you going.

The French spy series Le Bureau des Légendes [called “Falsk identitet” in Sweden] is also superb (but has far too many episodes for my taste): Five seasons with ten episodes each are available on Play for those who have the desire and stamina to watch.

What good TV series can you recommend? Send us your tips with a brief explanation of why the series is good.

We’ll publish the recommendations we receive regularly on the Staff Portal.
