In 2009, the Regional Executive Committee instituted a research prize for patient-centred research. It is a prize for initiatives in clinical research awarded to employees at Region Uppsala who, through their research, have contributed to significant improvements in healthcare.

Five prize winners

The 2021 Research Prize was awarded to Joachim Burman, Panagiotis Balaikas, Peter Stålberg, Anna Rostedt Punga and Lillemor Berntson. The prize winners received diplomas, flowers and prize money of SEK 10,000.

Joachim Burman, senior consultant and docent, receives the award for his research into autologous blood stem cell transplantation as a treatment method for the neurological disease MS. Panagiotis Baliakas, a specialist physician, receives the award for his research in clinical genetics. Peter Stålberg, senior consultant and professor, receives the award for his research in endocrine surgery and his long research experience that spans both the preclinical and clinical fields. Anna Rostedt Punga, senior consultant and professor, receives the award for her research on the autoimmune neurological disease myasthenia gravis (MG). Lillemor Berntson, senior consultant and docent, receives the award for her research in paediatric rheumatology and mostly juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

“It is gratifying that outstanding research at Uppsala University will benefit patients from the entire healthcare region. The benefits of our collaboration become clear on occasions like this,” says Mats Larhed, Vice-Rector of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and Chair of the Faculty Meeting.
