The report entitled Forskarutbildning vid Uppsala universitet (Doctoral Education at Uppsala University) consists of four independent but related studies. The four studies are:

  • What affects volume in doctoral education at Uppsala University – a study of admissions, study activity, and student completion rates.
  • Differences between the sexes in publishing patterns before and after a Degree of Doctor – those admitted to doctoral education from the 2007 cohort at Uppsala University.
  • Career paths at Uppsala University – those admitted to doctoral education from the 2007 cohort who have graduated and are still employed at Uppsala University.
  • After a Degree of Doctor – alumni information for the cohort admitted to Uppsala University in 2007.

A few points from the report’s summary of the four studies:

  • In the period 2011 to 2019, sickness absence for doctoral students with a doctoral studentship increased in terms of both total sickness absence and long-term sickness absence.
  • In terms of number of publications, there are no major differences between the sexes on the whole, but the publication rate is significantly higher for men than for women in some subject areas in the natural sciences.
  • Male doctoral students’ publications are cited more often than women’s in most subject areas except chemistry and social sciences, where women’s publications have higher rates of citation.
  • After defending their doctoral theses, the majority work in Uppsala County, followed by Stockholm County (in total 60 per cent). Thirty per cent work in academia and 17 per cent in business consultative services, primarily at research and development institutions.
