PMCU is a virtual centre and collaboration between Uppsala University Hospital, Region Uppsala and Uppsala University. Through interdisciplinary research and innovation, this collaboration will contribute to new solutions being developed and implemented in the healthcare system.

What is precision medicine?

Precision medicine means choosing personalised treatments based on the patient’s individual needs. There are several ways to achieve this, for example, through better diagnostic methods, such as imaging (PET) or genome sequencing, which can guide the choice of treatment strategy and may result in treatments with higher accuracy.

“Tailoring treatments will become increasingly important in the future. The development is very fast. It is about being able to choose the right treatment for the right disease at the right time. The benefits are many. Amongst other things, we avoid costly treatments that have little or no effect, and patients avoid unnecessary side effects,” says Eva Tiensuu Janson, member of the PMCU steering group and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Precision medicine is also used to detect which patients have more or less aggressive diseases.

“We have come furthest in cancer care and hereditary genetic diseases such as certain forms of breast cancer,” says Eva Tiensuu Janson.

National collaboration for a long time

PMCU is a collaboration between Uppsala University Hospital, Region Uppsala and Uppsala University. But in Uppsala, we have been working with precision medicine for many years and have come a long way in offering treatments based on precision medicine to our patients. The work with implementing precision medicine in healthcare is done nationally and in collaboration with all university hospitals and universities with medical faculties. At the national level, there is the Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS) initiative.

”It is a success factor that there is a well-established collaboration to benefit from the collected information from the entire country’s laboratories. But above all, it is important to be able to continue to drive developments and benefit from national cooperation at the regional level. We will benefit from all this with the new centre,” concludes Eva.

Inauguration of the Precision Medicine Centre Uppsala

The inauguration is a start for the virtual centre that will bring together the operations working in the field of precision medicine. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday 21 June in H:son Holmdahlsalen, Uppsala University Hospital, or via link.
