The Bjarne Ahlström Minnesfond för medicinsk forskning was founded in 2017 through a testamentary disposition of Bjarne Ahlström. At his passing, he left his entire estate to the foundation. The foundation's purpose is to promote scientific research in the field of medicine and provide support for the preparation of teaching and education in these subjects.

The prize is SEK 1 million. SEK 50,000 is a personal prize. SEK 950,000 is an unconditional grant for research and must be administered by a Swedish university or college.

  • The nominee must have defended their thesis after 1 January 2013 and conduct successful research (PI for grants) with an international impact in the subject area (good publications).
  • Selection criteria are research excellence (international impact); clinical relevance in an issue with a defined patient group, regardless of whether the research takes place within basic mechanisms; prevention; or clinical intervention.
  • The winner should report how they use the grant within 24 months of receiving the prize.

Each medical faculty in Sweden can nominate up to four candidates. The foundation then invites the top candidates to submit complete documentation and awards the prize in autumn 2022.

Therefore, send proposals for nominations and a current CV to Jin Saida at the Office for Medicine and Pharmacy no later than 11 April.
