Uppsala University annually awards the Hjärnäpplet innovation prize to recognise and reward researchers and doctoral students who have generated research results or knowledge assets that have led to an innovation. The Hjärnäpplet aims to reflect the University’s breadth, innovative strength, and quest for a sustainable future.

‘Innovation’ can often be interpreted rather narrowly in terms of science and technology. But the word ‘innovation’ should be interpreted broadly in this context. In other words, you are more than welcome to nominate researchers and doctoral students from the humanities and social sciences.

Important to nominate

Tora Holmberg, Vice-rector for the Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences and member of the nomination committee for the Hjärnäpplet prize, stresses the importance of nominating researchers and doctoral students from the humanities and social sciences.

“It’s about valuing and highlighting the challenge-driven research that is being done with such success in our disciplinary domain. The prize is awarded to those who have carried out research that has led to an innovation with the potential to benefit society and contribute to a sustainable society. It is no coincidence that the innovation prize targets the whole university: innovation is not limited to any particular subject area.”

Last year there were many excellent nominations from the humanities and social sciences and hopefully it will be even better this year.

“It’s clear that we’ve got people’s attention with this and have become better at recognising and promoting creativity and drive. The work on the committee is not easy – but that is how it should be,” says Tora Holmberg.

Nominations must be received no later than 24 April 2022.
