Jonas Oldgren is Director of Uppsala Clinical Research Center (UCR), Professor of Coagulation Research and Senior Consultant in Cardiology at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital. As Secretary General for Clinical Research, he will be scientifically responsible for the VR’s work in clinical research.

“I am proud and grateful for the trust of the Swedish Research Council. My goal is to contribute to a positive development of clinical research and clinical studies in Sweden, and I look forward to the exciting new assignment”, says Jonas.

One requirement is that the Secretary General is employed at a higher education institution. Combined with the position, Jonas Oldgren is expected to continue as a clinical researcher to have a solid foundation in the field.

“I will retain my position as Clinical Professor at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital, and I will continue to pursue ongoing collaborations and continue to run clinical research projects at the UCR and Department of Medical Sciences”, says Jonas and continues:

“I have had the privilege of collaborating with researchers in many different specialities from different research centres, from industry and with authorities both in Sweden and internationally. I hope that my experience in clinical research, management and collaboration can be useful in my new role.”

Eva Tiensuu Janson, Deputy Vice-Rector of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, fills in:

“It is very gratifying that Jonas is given such a prestigious assignment at the VR. He is a competent representative of our disciplinary domain and our broad collaborations, both nationally and internationally, where he has a large network of contacts. Jonas taking up the position is also a feather in the cap for Uppsala University, and I am convinced that clinical research in Sweden will develop with him in the new position as Secretary General.”

Jonas Oldgren's assignment as Director of the UCR will end when he takes up the new position as Secretary General on 16 March 2022.

“I hope that in the coming years, I can actively contribute to knowledge-based strategies for a positive development of clinical research and clinical studies in Sweden. Clinical research must become a natural activity integrated into healthcare, and this requires clear incentives and increased collaboration between stakeholders to achieve the success that aims at better health in the long term”, concludes Jonas Oldgren.
