How does it feel?

“It’s really quite strange that the years have passed so quickly and that I’m now part of the ‘senior’ guard.”

The award is given to employees who have worked for the state for at least 30 years. Maria Tovar has also been faithful to the same employer, Uppsala University, throughout all those years.

How did you end up staying so long – not just in the public service but also at Uppsala University?

“That I’ve been stayed in the public service is not something I have actually thought about. But that I've stayed so long at Uppsala University is because I’ve had such a fun job and wonderful colleagues. It actually feels more like a privilege to be meeting students and prospective students and be a small part of their journeys towards the future,” she says. With a huge range of courses and study programmes, seemingly endless career paths and unique individuals, there is never a dull moment!

But it can also be challenging, according to Maria.

“I can never predict what the day’s conversations will be about or what people I will encounter or questions I will get.

The Swedish Government decides on the rules that apply to the award. Before 1974, the various awards to public servants were differentiated based on their status. These days, it’s the same for everyone.

A person who receives the NOR award can choose between receiving a watch, a medal, or a piece of art glassware. What have you chosen?

“I’ve chosen a vase by Ernst Billgren,” says Maria Tovar.

The award will be given at a ceremony in hall X in University House on 29 October. In connection with the ceremony, a reception will also be held in the Chancellor’s Room. Maria Tovar is looking forward to attending both the ceremony and the reception.

“It feels rather celebratory and fun, especially now after such a long time without many social events and festivities," she says.

Mikael Wångmar will also attend from Maria Tovar’s unit.

“So, there will be two of us from the same unit who have enjoyed being part of the University for such a long time.”
