Thematic Evaluation of Widened Participation 2020
Since 2001, higher education institutions (HEIs) have been obliged by law to actively promote wider participation in higher education (Higher Education Act [2001:1263], Chapter 1, Section 5). On behalf of the government, The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ), will evaluate how HEIs work with widening participation. The evaluation will take place during 2019-2022 and is made in the form of a thematic evaluation. The HEIs will write a self-evaluation about how their work with widened participation is conducted. At Uppsala University a group has been appointed by the university director to conduct the evaluation. Material for the self-evaluation has been obtained from the follow-up of the Action Plan for Widening Participation 2019-2020 (UFV2016/2066) and from Uppsala University’s annual report 2020.
The evaluation consists of two parts. One part is an evaluation of the HEIs work with widened participation. The other part is an analysis of the social imbalance in the recruitment to higher education from different perspectives, and a knowledge overview of widened participation in Sweden and the Nordic countries.
The thematic evaluation intends to show how the country’s HEIs work with widened participation, and what results have been achieved and what areas need development. By doing this they aim to contribute to knowledge and development. The ambition is for the evaluation to both create knowledge about the work with widened participation and support the development towards the highest possible quality in the sector. Writing a self-evaluation can be part of the internal quality work where the actors concerned get a common view of Uppsala University work with widened participation.
