A Deep Approach to Doctoral Supervision
Organizer: Division for Quality Enhancement, Academic Teaching and Learning
Dates Spring 2023, see calendar.
Name in Swedish is Doktorandhandledning på djupet.
Theme: Should first-year doctoral students be supervised collectively or individually? Effects on thesis completion and time to completion
Time: Tuesday 16th of May, 10.00-12.00 am
Place: Zoom
Given the choice, most PhD students would prefer to receive individual supervision rather than be supervised alongside their peers as part of a collective. This is understandable, given the undivided attention and precise, directly relevant advice one would receive. However, the experiences of individually and collectively supervised students on the same doctoral programme have been compared. It was found that collective supervision, during the first year at least, is correlated with significantly shorter times to thesis completion compared to individual supervision.
At this seminar, Professor Ulf Mörkenstam will address and subject the above topic to discussion. He is on staff at the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University.
