Leave from studies and discontinuation

Leave from studies

A student who wishes to take leave from their studies must apply for leave from studies. The grounds that entitle you to approved leave from studies are set out in the Statute Book of the Swedish Council for Higher Education (in Swedish).

If the student specifies other grounds in their application, the programme coordinator determines whether or not to approve the leave from studies.

There are no time limitations on applying for leave from studies. An application can thus be processed and granted retroactively. There are also no limitations on the length of the period for which a student can apply for leave. The department may determine whether or not to approve the leave from studies based on the grounds and documentation submitted by the student.

Guaranteed place after returning from leave
If a student is granted leave from studies, this means they have a guaranteed place after returning from leave. The decision on granted leave from studies must specify when the student is to take up their studies again. It must also specify the conditions for registration when the student is to take up their studies again. This applies both to the registration process – via antagning.se or via the department – and to whether there is a final date of registration.

Appeals
A student has three weeks to appeal if their application for leave from studies is rejected. The appeal is to be sent to registrator@uu.se. The appeal must specify which decision is being appealed and its registration number. The appeal is registered at Uppsala University and then sent on to the Higher Education Appeals Board, which examines the case.

Application for leave from studies
You can download the application form for leave from studies here. The form is available in Swedish and English.

Discontinuation

A student who discontinues their studies without having applied for or having been granted leave from studies does not have a guaranteed place when wishing to take up their studies again. However, the student is entitled to return if there is space on the course.
