Rights related to recorded material for teaching
Intellectual property rights for teaching staff
There is no formal decision or regulation covering intellectual property rights for materials produced for teaching purposes at Uppsala University. Therefore, the teacher being the author of such right is considered to retain the right to the extent nothing else is agreed, which can be done on a case-by-case basis.
The University’s right of use/usage rights
While the intellectual property rights remain with the teacher being the author, a widespread understanding is that the University has usage rights to material that has been produced by staff for teaching purposes (the so-called tumregeln). This means that the University is not required to seek permission from the author/teacher in order to continue using such material for teaching activities. However, the University is not allowed to edit the material in any significant way (i.e., altering content with a high degree of originality) without the author’s/teacher’s permission.
Materials not protected by intellectual property rights
Material that is not protected by intellectual property rights can be used freely. Typically this is material with such low degree of originality that it could have been developed similarly by individuals working independently from each other. Examples could include quite simple presentations, or exam questions.
