Biological material
Research waste in the form of carcasses, organs, animal by-products, blood and tissue carry a risk of contamination/infection and are therefore handles as biological waste or infectious waste, depending on risk assessment and the campus management’s routines. Biological waste is sent for incineration with the proper documentation according to the campus managements routines. Carcasses generated at CFVUU are handled according to a separate routine available at CFVUU.
For technical combustion reasons, the biological waste is divided into:
- Small biological waste: up to 5 kg (approximately a rabbits size), which is sent to Vattenfall-Boländerna for incineration.
- Large biological waste: More than 5 kg, which is sent to SVA-Ulltuna for incineration.
See the infectious waste section for more details.
Plant based material, which does not carry any increased risk for contamination/infection, and is not genetically modified or an invasive species, is discarded as combustible waste.
