Responsibilities and organisation
Everyone who works or studies at Uppsala University is responsible for sorting their own waste according to given instructions and using the containers and boxes provided for sorting waste.
The department head/equivalent is, according to the department head delegation, ultimately responsible for ensuring that waste is sorted according to current legislation and instructions issued by the university.
The campus management is responsible for coordinating waste management, which involves collecting, storing and transporting certain types of waste.
The unit for Environment and Physical Work Environment (EMFA) inform about current legislation regarding waste management, write guidelines and give advice and support to personnel at the university. Link to Waste management procedure in Rules and regulations.
Why should the waste be sorted?
According to Swedish legislation, waste must be sorted. By sorting the waste, it can be handled in the way that suits the respective types of waste best. Hazardous waste is disposed of so it does not cause harm to people and the environment. Sorted "normal" waste fractions become raw material in the production of new products or produce energy through combustion.
In order for waste to be reused and recycled, it must be sorted into the fractions for which there are functioning recycling systems.
