Multi-factor authentication – for a more secure login
Multi-factor authentication, or two-step verification, gives you added protection when logging in. In short, it means that you need to perform an additional action to verify your identity when logging in to certain services of systems at the University.
Uppsala University offers two different methods of multi-factor authentication:
- Using your mobile phone (TOTP)
- Using a USB stick (YubiKey) provided by IT Support
- Using your browser (TOTP). Use this option as a last resort.
Note: Multi-factor authentication by mobile phone or USB stick only works for services and systems for which two-step verification is enabled. The method may be a requirement or an option depending on the service. You cannot choose where to use the login method. If you are unsure whether multi-factor authentication is appropriate for your needs, please contact itsupport@uu.se.
Login with mobile – TOTP
TOTP (Time-based One Time Password) is a secure way to verify your identity via multi-factor authentication. All you need is a mobile phone with an app.
Instructions
- Download the app you wish to use. We recommend that you use Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
- Log in to konto.weblogin.uu.se and navigate to the heading "Multi-factor authentication".
- Click on the "Activate/Create a new key" button.
- Scan the QR code with your phone in the app.
- Once your key has been created in your app, you can generate a 6-digit code which you can then use to log in to the required system.
Login with USB stick – YubiKey
YubiKey is a physical key in the form of a USB stick that you can use for authentication in selected systems and services. If you need to use this method, you will first receive instructions when requesting access to the system or service in question. IT Support will then help you order and retrieve your YubiKey
Note: At present, login with YubiKey only works with the Firefox browser. Please install Firefox if you are asked to use this login method to access a system or service.
Important: Should you accidentally lose an active YubiKey key, you should block it immediately to prevent anyone else from using it. Contact itsupport@uu.se if you need help.
