Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation
The Foundation primarily supports research in clinical medicine, law and the social sciences. Only projects that are initiated by researchers and that are of the highest international standard can be applied for.
Please read the Foundation’s guidelines for project grants to determine if your project falls within the Foundation’s frameworks and purposes of the announcement.
New this year is that MMW has a call for applications aimed at researchers at Swedish universities seeking grants for research on autonomous systems and AI.
According to Foundation rules, project applications to MMW are to undergo an internal prioritisation at Uppsala University. Prioritisation is based on a pre-application, which is to be signed by the relevant head of department, who then certifies that the department acknowledges and can accept the terms and conditions of a Wallenberg grant. Pre-applications provide the basis for evaluation and prioritising.
MMW is supporting the program WASP-HS within humanities and society. As a complement to this initiative the Foundation is, in the 2020 call for project grants, interested to receive applications within the field of human and social consequences and challenges of AI and autonomous systems. See The WASP-HS program website for more information about open calls.
The pre-application for internal prioritisation within Uppsala University is to be submitted no later than 17 February 2020.
Application to the Foundation for prioritised applications is due no later than 1 April 2020.
If you are particularly interested in making a project application within the field of AI and autonomous systems, contact Anders Westlin directly.
The pre-application can be written in Swedish or English and should contain the following:
- Signed certification for the pre-application by the relevant head of department (principal applicant department) and scanned into a PDF.
- Summary of the application (max. 2 A4 pages). This should contain:
- a project plan with a clear description of the purpose and objectives,
- timetable and implementation.
The project should have a consistent scholarly question to be addressed. Describe how skills of the principal applicant and any fellow applicant contribute to the project.
Combine documents 1 and 2 into a single PDF file and email your application to:
Humanities and Social Sciences and Medicine and Pharmacy: Anders Westlin
Science and Technology: Cecilia Alsmark
Note that the pre-application is only a basis for the internal prioritising the Foundation requests and is not a final version of your application.
