If as head of department/equivalent you have not yet initiated contact with occupational health services, it is now high time to do so to be able to receive support with the rehabilitation process. If the ill health is related to work, sick leave must be authorised via occupational health services. If the ill health is unrelated to work, sick leave may need to be authorised via a medical centre or specialist physician. Even if another care provider is behind the sick leave, a rehab coordinator from occupational health services can still provide good support to the employer for matters regarding the return to work and adaptations.
It is highly important that you remain in contact with your employee and follow up on their health progress and return to work. You can also enlist the help and support of an HR representative. Don’t forget to remind your employee that they can obtain support from their union representative during the rehabilitation period.
In the event of long-term sick leave, it is a good idea for follow ups of the absence and rehab plan to take place in occupational health service premises, if occupational health service is in charge of the sick leave. Continuous follow-up with the employee about to return to work after sick leave is also carried out in the workplace. Social support from an immediate supervisor and colleagues is important for successful rehabilitation.
As the head of department/manager, you need to exhaust all possibilities to enable a return to regular work before determining more comprehensive adaptations or another placement. Enlist the help and support of an HR representative.
Försäkringskassan is the authority that assesses the right to sickness benefit for people whose work capacity is reduced as a result of illness. Read more about Försäkringskassan assessments and the rehab chain here. After 180 days, the employee will only be entitled to sickness benefit if they are unable to perform any work in the regular labour market.
