Quartz and stone dust
Dust that contains quartz particles is a health hazard and can cause e.g. silicosis (stone dust lung) which is an incurable lung disease. Dust can occur for example when stone is crushed, sawn, when drilling, driving och grinding concrete or when opening holes.
In workplaces where quartz-containing dust is generated, the employer is obliged to carry out exposure measurments, unless it is clear that the hygenic limit values for quartz-containin dust are not exceeded. Contact the university's occupational health specialist if you want help with measuring the exposure to quartz dust.
If the content of quartz dust cannot be kept below the hygenic limit value, personal protective equipment must be used. Respiratory protection must be at least of the half-mask type with a P3 filter, which is effective against quartz dust.
