Computer glasses and safety glasses
All employees who work at a computer screen for over one hour per day are entitled to an eye test and, where necessary, computer glasses. Prescription safety glasses are provided when standard safety glasses cannot be combined with regular prescription glasses, e.g., for laboratory or workshop activities. Computer glasses (VDU glasses) and prescription safety glasses, including eye test, are paid for by the employer and remain the property of the employer. Regular reading glasses are not subsidised.
Uppsala University must use the National framework agreement for purchase of computer and safety glasses. The agreement runs from 3 April 2023 until 2 April 2027. A framework agreement for glasses has been established with Synsam Group Sweden AB and additional actors. This means that Synsam must be used as the supplier in towns and cities where they have branches. Special conditions, which are regulated in the agreement, need to be met in order for a supplier other than Synsam to be engaged. The department/equivalent will pay for an eye test and computer or safety glasses in accordance with the price appendix below. This means that employees will not incur costs for any glasses purchased within the framework agreement. Computer or safety glasses purchased outside of the framework agreement will not be subsidised.
Note that the employer has an obligation to provide computer glasses free of charge for the employee (Arbete vid bildskärm, AFS 1998:5 (av.se), §6). This applies regardless of visual impairment. If an employee has vision defects other than those specified in the agreement, contact HR strategist Karin Karlström.
In consultation with an optician, the employer and employee may agree on suitable intervals for new eye tests during the employment period.
Should visual conditions require examination in the workplace, contact the University occupational health services, Falck. Please note: This must be supported by the head of department/equivalent before ordering as ergonomic workplace assessments are an additional service.
Information about how to book an eye test and, if necessary, try out glasses
- Complete and print the requisition form for computer/safety glasses. The requisition applies to both eye test, glasses and frames. The requisition form can be found among the HR division's forms (form 8.0.2b)
- Contact the HR at your institution/equivalent or your manager for information about who is authorized to sign the requisition form.
- Book your eye test at Synsam via Glasögon på jobbet - Synsam or alternatively by calling/visiting the store. (Text in Swedish)
- Bring the signed requisition form to Synsam. Synsam needs the requisition form so that the institution/equivalent can be invoiced and receive the correct price according to the agreement. The invoice is sent directly to the institution/equivalent and you do not have to make any expenses.
If you can´t find an appointment for an eye examination within two weeks
According to the agreement, we have the right to get an appointment for an eye examination within two weeks.
When booking an appointment for an eye examination for monitor glasses or safety glasses at Synsam in Uppsala, this is booked primarily via the website (terminalglasögon/skyddsglasögon, information in Swedish only). If an appointment is not available within two weeks, university employees have the option of emailing the store on Dragarbrunnsgatan, which will then help find an appointment. Email first and last name and date of birth (not the last four digits) and the phone number you want to be contacted on, alternatively email address if that is preferred. Email address: uppsala@synsam.com. Write Kammarkollegiet in the subject line.
