Parental leave and care for a sick child (VAB)

Here you can find information about parental leave and leave and care for a sick child (VAB) and how to apply for it.

Parental leave

The employee has the right to take full-time leave of absence at 100% until the child is 18 months old. Upon adoption of a child, the 18-month period begins from the day the child is in the employee’s care. You may also take partial parental leave until the child is 8 years of age, or has completed the first year of school. As a governmental employee, you may also take partial parental leave up until the school year when the child becomes 12 years of age.

VAB – sick child leave/temporary parental leave

VAB, the temporary parental leave benefit is used when the child is ill or when the regular caregiver is ill or otherwise unable to care for the child. The benefit may be transferred to another person, in case neither of the parents can take the time off, for instance gainfully employed grandparents or another person.

PAYE income reports is submitted monthly. This means that Uppsala University cannot repay taxes to the employee in case of wrongly paid-out salaries. It is therefore important for employees to apply for leaves of absence well ahead of time in Primula Web, in order for the correct salary to be paid out and the correct tax be deducted.
