Doctoral students
The time as a doctoral student can be one of the most exciting and rewarding periods of your life. Having the opportunity to get to the bottom of your subject, develop your powers of critical thinking and hone your ability to conduct research work independently is perceived by many doctoral students as a privilege. But doctoral studies can also be very demanding and impose unmanageable expectations. Working on your thesis and attending courses, perhaps accompanied by sporadic periods of teaching, can lead to feelings of inadequacy and stress. In order to handle the occasionally demanding life as a doctoral student it is important to know the requirements that apply to you and where to turn if problems arise.
At the personnel department our task is to provide information about the study and employment conditions for doctoral students. We focus mainly on employer-related issues such the work environment, the rules applicable to each form of student funding, statutory benefits, support for the disabled and how certain practical matters should be handled. This means that there are others at the university who focus more on the scholarly or study-related aspects of a doctoral student’s life. Many times there are no clear boundaries marking the jurisdiction in matters that arise, but the different departments at Uppsala University are working together to make the information as clear and accessible as possible.
