On-line Career Programme for Doctoral Students
Training in Career planning for Doctoral Students at Uppsala University
Webbaserad utbildning i karriärplanering för doktorander vid Uppsala universitet. För mer information, läs den engelska texten nedan.
What is the programme about?
• A tightly-focused career planning course with core material delivered online, to maximise flexibility and suit people working full time. The programme is in English.
• The course’s four modules are spaced over eight weeks. They offer a sure way for you to consider methodically your own drivers, strengths, priorities and options, to help you make active, wellinformed career choices. The programme is written for researchers and is suited to scholars in any discipline. It makes no assumptions about your preferences and does not push particular pathways.
• This is your opportunity to ask yourself searching questions about your future, early in your career. The course material guides you through establishing realistic goals for the short and longer term, and craIing these goals into a clear action plan.
• It offers straightforward, practical training that recognises your post-graduate study as a platform for a range of career options, not just a 'pipeline' into intensely competitive academic pathways.
• The programme is delivered by the researcher training specialists, PostdocTraining, who have been leading career training courses for PhD students and postdocs at Swedish universities since 2014.
• The course is free of charge to all Uppsala par1cipants who secure a place, and their departments.
What will the programme do for me?
• The course first guides you through a short, private self-assessment process so that the career plan you go on to develop aligns with your strengths and preferences. Practical exercises and downloadable tools help make sure your plan captures both career destionations and specific actions that will focus your efforts and accelerate your progress.
• It will give you the motivation and resources to take charge of your career, whether you do not yet know your preferred path or you already have a goal and are looking for the best way to reach it.
What won't the programme do?
• Do the tough part for you! This is a brief, part-time course, but there is real work and commitmentinvolved on your part (ave. 12-15 hrs over eight weeks). Planning your future is not easy!
• The course will not tell you what jobs are available now or how to apply for specific roles, though it will give you the platform for making informed choices and presenting your transferrable skills.
• It does not award points or lead to a formal qualification, though a certificate of participation will be available on request to add to your CV. Taking the course does not qualify a participant for an extension of a doctoral studentship (förlängning).
Programme timeframe and main elements
• Four modules, in a choice of online text, downloadable PDF and audio formats. One new module is released every two weeks, involving a commitment of about two hours each on average.
• Once published, content is accessible on demand to avoid diverting you from core study and research.
• Three webinars of around 45 minutes each, to allow for live discussion of your questions, career
strategies, pathways and key skills to support your progress
• Access to the Career Options Masterlist, profiling a wide range of careers pursued by people with a background in academic research.
• The opportunity to be paired with a fellow Uppsala PhD candidate ‘buddy’ during the course.
• You retain access to all the resources for the long term. That means you can revisit the modules, download fresh copies of exercises and planning tools, and review webinar recordings as you wish.
• The commitment of 1me required is 12-15 hours on average over 8 weeks including webinars, even for those taking advantage of 'buddy' arrangements and the programme's private LinkedIn group.
